(Dailyexe) – A U.S. senator proposed a bill on Friday mandating the Commerce Department to implement location verification procedures for exporting controlled artificial intelligence chips. This move aims to restrict China’s ability to obtain sophisticated semiconductor technologies.
Referred to as the “Chip Security Act,” this legislation mandates that AI chips subject to export controls, along with items containing these chips, must include location-tracking technology to aid in detecting potential diversions, smuggling, or other improper uses of the products.
“Thanks to these improved security protocols, we can keep expanding access to American technology without jeopardizing our national safety,” stated Republican Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas.
The legislation requires firms exporting AI chips to inform the Bureau of Industry and Security about any instances where their goods have been redirected from their designated destination or when they face efforts to interfere with them.
This action follows closely after U.S. President Donald Trump stated his intention to revoke and alter an Obama-Biden era regulation that restricted the export of advanced AI chips, aiming to safeguard American dominance in artificial intelligence technology and prevent China from obtaining them.
U.S. Representative Bill Foster, a Democrat representing Illinois, intends to present a related bill in the upcoming weeks, according to Dailye reported on Monday.
Limiting China’s ability to obtain AI tech that might boost its military strength has been a major priority for U.S. legislators. Reports of extensive illegal shipments of Nvidia’s processors into China, which breach export control regulations, have only intensified these worries.
