Biggest U.S. Power Line Set to Launch in Kansas by 2026

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) —
The Grain Belt Express
has granted $1.7 billion in contracts to Quanta Services and Kiewit Energy Group to start working on the biggest electric transmission initiative ever seen in the U.S., an 800-mile connection spanning from Kansas to Indiana.

Phase 1, which aims to connect Kansas and Missouri, is scheduled to start construction in 2026. The project’s organizers claim that this line will provide up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity, reduce energy expenses, and forecasted to generate over 4,000 employment opportunities.

Created by Invenergy, this initiative employs high-voltage direct current technology to link four electrical grids. Over 1,500 land deals have been finalized in Kansas and Missouri, involving an investment of $105 million in payments to property owners.

According to a press statement, Invenergy states that they will prioritize using locally-sourced materials whenever feasible, and the initiative will not depend on funding from ratepayers.

Lawmakers in Kansas are supporting this initiative as a significant infrastructure investment that will bring long-term advantages to the state.
