FirstEnergy Deploys Helicopters with Advanced Tech for Power Line Inspections

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – FirstEnergy has informed residents across their six-state coverage area to anticipate low-flying helicopters in the coming weeks.

The energy firm plans to carry out aerial examinations over approximately 5,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines utilizing infrared and ultraviolet (IR/UV) technologies.

The objective is to identify “equipment problems at an early stage and those that are not visible within transmission substations and along high-voltage power lines, which would typically go unnoticed during standard visual examinations.”

A check via IR/UV is conducted at slow patrol speeds ranging from 25 to 35 miles per hour, employing an infrared and ultraviolet camera positioned beneath the helicopter.

The transmission system serves as the initial safeguard against power disruptions since it delivers electricity to substations and distributes it through power lines to all of our customers,” stated Mark Mroczynski, President of FirstEnergy Transmission. “These efforts bolster our significant investments aimed at enhancing our electrical infrastructure to address the nation’s increasing demand for energy.
