Commack, NY – The Commack School District has appointed Melissa Blady as the new principal of North Ridge Primary School.
During her 15-year tenure in elementary education, Blady has worked as an assistant principal, coordinated mathematics and technology programs, and taught classes.
She officially received approval from the Board of Education on Thursday evening. She will take over from retiring Katherine Rihm, who has excelled as the head of the primary school for 17 years.
“Among a highly skilled pool of applicants, Melissa’s experience, vigor, and zeal were particularly noteworthy,” stated Scott Oshrin, the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources, in a press statement. “We’re thrilled to have her join our team. Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to Mrs. Rihm for her extensive commitment to both North Ridge and the broader Commack community.”
Over the last two academic years, Blady has been functioning as the assistant principal at Center Street Elementary School within the Herricks Union Free School District. Besides handling her administrative responsibilities, she led the introduction of the Makerspace initiative, overseeing both the space’s layout and the creation of educational content. This program encourages students to engage in exploration, engineering, and innovation activities.
She formerly worked as the elementary school math and technology coordinator for Herricks.
She has taught fourth grade in Herricks from 2015 to ’21, and before that, she spent five years instructing students in first, second, and third grades at PS 18X located in the Bronx.
Blady obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Oneonta, along with a Master of Science degree in Childhood Special Education from Queens College. Additionally, Blady secured an Advanced Diploma in School Leadership and Technology from the New York Institute of Technology.
“I feel incredibly honored, elated, and enthusiastic about being a leader at a school where remarkable achievements are already taking place,” Blady stated. “I’m eager to carry forward the initiatives that Kathy has initiated.”
