Apple’s foldable iPhone
may just be a rumor at this point, but when it does debut — possibly as soon as next year — it could feature a custom display process that could set the standard for future phones.
That’s according to a rumor appearing on Korea’s naver blog. The leaker, a poster named
yeux1122
asserts that the foldable iPhone will come with a Samsung-made screen designed to meet Apple’s criteria for slimness, energy efficiency, and luminosity standards.
In an intriguing addition to the rumor, Samsung may have designed the screen as part of its display business. But Apple would hold the trademark.
The rumored display balances thinness and power by integrating the touch sensor directly into the panel — a process known as in-cell touch.
For reference, Samsung currently builds its devices with a separate touch layer placed on top of the OLED display. That’s called on-cell touch, and you can see it in action on board current Galaxy Fold models. For example, the
Galaxy Z Fold 6
places its touch electrodes on the top layer of the OLED panel, covering them with a film.
In-cell touch brings several advantages, but one of the most prominent is that it allows the phone to cut
Its total thickness decreased by approximately 19%.
. Intergrating the touch cells also allows for better response time, and removes the lamination gap that appears on other foldables.
The report hints that Samsung may have strategically reduced the thickness of the
Galaxy Z Fold 7
To meet Apple’s criteria for a supplier. As an example, we recently learned that Samsung’s folding device
might be the slimmest globally
at a staggering 3.9mm.
What additional information have we learned regarding the folding screen of the iPhone?
This isn’t the first instance whereApple has been rumored to be working onenergy-efficientscreens. Previous reports suggestthatApple intends to enhanceitsdisplay’spower efficiencyby incorporatinga novel display driver integrated circuit (DDI).
The device, referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Flip based on who you hear from, is anticipated to unfold to reveal a
7.8-inch inner display
With a 5.5-inch display on the exterior, this design bears many similarities to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.
Nevertheless, one of the most intriguing speculations surrounding Apple’s gadget is that it might include a
completely creaseless screen
. If correct, this could represent quite a significant breakthrough, since even the
best foldable phones
include a fold of some sort.
This new display’s success essentially depends on… yes, the hinge. Many manufacturers of foldable phones steer clear of in-cell touch because of concerns over both the mechanical strain and the hinge’s longevity. However, when it comes to the hinge design that Apple intends to use, we remain largely uninformed.
aside from quite ambiguous patent filings.
Only time will reveal whether the iPhone Fold’s sturdiness will turn into an issue.
For now, we must wait since it appears unlikely that we’ll witness a
The foldable iPhone will not be available before at least 2026.
However, when it finally arrives, there are signs that the expense might
exceed $2,100 at launch
, this might pose challenges for Apple in making the device attractive, regardless of any advanced screen technology.
