Merrell’s Bold New Trail Shoe Challenges Hoka’s Boldest Models, Designed for Ultra Runners Who Mean Business

Trail runners are accustomed to encountering bold footwear designs. Now, Merrell has joined this trend with a recent launch that’s sure to turn heads on the trails.

It has been released now, and following the launch of the
SpeedARC Surge BOA
Back in January, this shoe stands out as one of the most unconventional designs we’ve come across from the Michigan-based brand.

After cementing its position as a frontrunner in hiking footwear with models such as the world’s
top-selling hiking shoe, the Moab
, Merrell unexpectedly surged into the trail running market two years ago with several outstanding footwear options, such as the
Morphlite
,
Agility Peak 5
and
Long Sky 2 Matryx
, which I still frequently use from my collection of hiking shoes.

The updated MTL Adapt Matryx has similarities with the Long Sky 2 Matryx, particularly in using ultra-strong and lightweight materials.
Kevlar
Fibers at the top ensure breathability and durability. However, what immediately draws attention is the notably thick midsole.

Made with a robust 36mm of FloatPro foam in a bubble pattern, the company claims this footwear is tailored for ultra marathon runners. This feature provides superior cushioning and energy return, ensuring both comfort and support during long runs.

Over longer distances, the footbed is notably wider, providing greater stability. However, this design may be less suitable for those with narrower feet. Additionally, these shoes feature a neutral 6mm heel-to-toe drop.

So, does it measure up?

Reviewing the details, this sneaker offers more than just an audacious midsole and striking color schemes. Its breathable mesh liner ensures your feet stay fresh and dry by facilitating sweat evaporation and swiftly draining water should you encounter muddy trails.

A cushioned collar enhances comfort by balancing the broad footbed, providing a more comfortable fit. Additionally, targeted 3D printing and TPU reinforcements in high-wear areas boost resilience, prolonging shoe lifespan. The model also features an adjustable elastic lace holder similar to those found on other Merrell footwear, ensuring your shoelaces stay neatly tucked away—a real boon during dense trail runs and competitive events.

The MegaGrip rubber outsoles equip these shoes to be a formidable choice tactically across various terrains, including both dry and wet surfaces, thanks to their 4mm lug pattern designed to boost grip and swiftly clear away dirt during runs. However, exposing quite a bit of midsole helps keep them lightweight but might compromise durability over time.

Each shoe tips the scales at only 10.15 oz (288 g), making them nearly as light as the ultra-lightweight Long Sky 2 Matryx yet providing considerably greater padding. Should their performance match up to this description, we believe Merrell could have a real contender for longer distance runs with these shoes.

The Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx trail running shoe can be purchased today for $180.
