SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) – Sun Prairie is doubling down on cutting-edge traffic technology, announcing plans to expand its network of AI-powered traffic signals after seeing early success with the system.
Initially, the city partnered with Traffic and Parking Control Co. (TAPCO) to install NoTraffic’s AI-driven radar and video integration system. Following this installation, the technology has been active at three key locations: two along State Highway 19 and another close to a school that experiences significant foot traffic. Each of these spots was pinpointed for intervention because they presented critical safety issues coupled with substantial vehicular flow.
At the corner of Main Street and Ruby Lane, where one of the AI-powered traffic lights has been installed, David Salmon, the city’s Transportation Coordinator, highlighted the enhanced safety measures that have been observed.
We previously experienced several instances where pedestrians lost their lives in this area due to the absence of traffic signals,” stated David Salmon, who serves as the Transportation Coordinator for Sun Prairie. “Installing these traffic lights along with cameras has significantly improved safety conditions, allowing pedestrians to confidently cross streets under the protection provided by the green and red lights.
NoTraffic’s technology employs a blend of radar and video to observe traffic patterns and react instantaneously. In contrast to conventional timer-based systems, this artificial intelligence system adapts signal timings according to current street activities. Authorities claim that this approach has improved traffic movement and reduced accidents.
We haven’t encountered such issues yet, which is definitely a significant advantage,” Salmon noted. “AI truly gives us an edge with this. Moreover, it provides us with crucial information. So, if there happens to be a surge in traffic, we will recognize it the following day and can adjust our plans accordingly.
The forthcoming expansion will encompass signal upgrades as well as the introduction of intelligent sensors in major thoroughfares. The city aims for these improvements to aid in achieving their Vision Zero objective of completely eradicating traffic deaths.
We’re receiving some informal reports indicating that traffic is moving more smoothly due to improved situational awareness,” stated Tom Cooper, who serves as the Vice President of Public Sector at NoTraffic. “And since traffic flow has gotten smoother, it’s also become safer—that much is certain.
Cooper states that the NoTraffic system enables municipalities to implement instant, data-driven modifications.
“It’s kind of the best of both worlds,” he said. “We can make operational improvements very easily by giving this broad situational awareness to intersections with these smart sensors, but also having the ability to measure what’s actually going on and make immediate improvements.”
As Sun Prairie expands, municipal officials believe that AI can be utilized to enhance infrastructure growth effectively, boost residents’ quality of life, and decrease accidents on the area’s streets.
