Apple Set to Challenge Ray-Ban’s Meta Glasses in 2027

  • Apple‘s reportedly working on a new chip to power smart glasses, which should be ready in 2027

  • The initial smart glasses from Apple are expected to compete with the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

  • The firm is apparently continuing work on a more sophisticated version as well.

It has seemed like Apple has been rumoring about developing smart glasses perpetually, which is logical since such a wearable device would presumably be much lighter than the
Apple Vision Pro
With a more streamlined overall design and, ideally, easier on your budget too.

A new report from
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman
Details indicate that the tech behemoth based in Cupertino is advancing with a chipset designed for “their initial smart glasses.”

The document states that ‘advancements have been achieved’ regarding the chip, indicating that internal efforts on the intelligent eyewear are intensifying and that manufacturing of the processor is scheduled to commence by late 2027.

Currently, dates might shift and alter, however, this could potentially place those intelligent glasses on track for a launch within approximately two years.

These aren’t the comprehensive AR glasses that have often been speculated about; instead, according to the report, these smart glasses “would rival the well-liked Ray-Ban styles” from Meta.
Meta Ray-Bans
are a hit for the company, landing in a similar build to classic glasses. They allow one to take photos or videos without taking a phone out and offer easy access to the Meta AI assistant.

Apple hasn’t finalized the specific features for these smart glasses, which won’t superimpose images onto your surroundings, according to the report. It states, “Apple is presently investigating non-AR glasses that utilize cameras to analyze the nearby area and depend on artificial intelligence to aid users.”

This seems quite akin to what Meta Ray-Ban provides as well.
Visual Intelligence

lineup – and iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max – which uses Google or ChatGPT to identify what’s in the scene. Hopefully, by 2027, though, Apple Intelligence will be more widely rolled out, with AI-powered Siri in the hands of plenty of consumers on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Seeing that this reported chip is modeled after the Apple Watch’s SoC, it’s likely that these smart glasses would pair with another device like an iPhone, probably in a process similar to setting up an Apple Watch or AirPods.

Nonetheless, Apple doesn’t intend to solely concentrate on developing smart glasses without augmented reality features. According to the report, both this latest model and the earlier speculated version are currently under development, with Tim Cook keen on outcompeting Meta in the realm of smart glasses.

Providing multiple models at the time of release could easily draw in additional customers, particularly if doing so reduces the starting cost.

Despite this, we’re still quite early in the development cycle for Apple’s anticipated smart glasses, with the earliest possible release being around 2027. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if numerous leaks and speculations surface well before then.

In the nearer term, however,
The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference will begin on June 9, 2025.
, and the company ought to provide more details about its upcoming platforms and broader Apple Intelligence initiatives. Perhaps we may see a significant upgrade for the Vision Pro, potentially indicating what future eyewear might entail.
