Lucid Teams Up With KAUST to Accelerate EV Technology and Autonomous Driving

Lucid Group, an American electric vehicle (EV) company, has joined forces with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to enhance EV technology and develop advanced self-driving features.

This collaboration seeks to utilize KAUST’s high-performance computing resources to advance the future of electric vehicles.

Lucid Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said: “KAUST’s world-class research infrastructure and talent has the potential to further boost our technology leadership in many dimensions incl. our ADAS and AD roadmap—bringing cutting-edge innovation from the lab to the road.

This partnership bolsters our worldwide research and development presence, providing extra support for our initiatives aimed at maintaining our leadership in electric vehicle drivetrains, battery systems, cutting-edge materials, and software-defined vehicle platforms.

The partnership aims at developing and testing advanced future-oriented parts and technologies.

Winterhoff stated, “This partnership underscores our ongoing efforts to bolster our cooperation with the Kingdom and shows our dedication to supporting their ambition of becoming a leading hub for mobility innovation.”

This collaboration will encompass the merging of multiple engineering fields such as mechanical, electrical, thermal, and chemical engineering.

This exploration will delve into developments within materials science, concentrating on advanced metallic and polymer-based composites, heat-reflective glass treatments, cutting-edge laminates, and substitute materials designed to enhance both vehicle performance and longevity.

Lucid SVP of product and chief engineer Eric Bach added: “Access to high-performance computing at this level is truly transformative. It dramatically enhances our ability to develop advanced fluids, materials and alloys, simulate real-world physics for crash safety and structural optimisation, model fluid dynamics and thermal transfer, analyse electromagnetic flux, and accelerate AI training for digital twin technology, autonomous systems, and large language models.

We feel profoundly thankful for this chance and are enthusiastic about the advancements it will bring to our engineering and AI projects.

The research and development work will take place in KAUST’s state-of-the-art facilities located within King Abdullah Economic City.

Last month, Lucid
expanded its Arizona footprint
By obtaining a manufacturing plant in Coolidge and a Phoenix facility, which were previously owned by the insolvent company Nikola.
