How Did the ‘Sinners’ Execute Those Incredible Twin Shots?

I enjoy watching movies where an actor portrays dual roles. It often works exceptionally well within specific genres, allowing the performer to showcase their versatility by embodying two completely distinct characters.

The fact that in this film everybody keeps discussing its

Well,
the Academy
has just unveiled a brief clip highlighting the cinematography involved.

Let’s dive in.

How They Achieved the Twin Effect in Sinners

I really admire how Autumn Durald handled the cinematography.

She truly manages to capture the breadth both within and beyond the jukebox, simultaneously infusing the town and its environs with significant character.

In order to get the twin shots, they relied on the split-screen approach, which is sort of the classic way to do this stuff.

To achieve this, you record the actor twice, filming each cousin’s role individually. The two recordings are later seamlessly merged during the editing process to create the impression that two separate people are conversing on camera.

However, that wasn’t everything they accomplished; they also introduced some groundbreaking elements I had never witnessed previously. During these interactions between characters, they utilized a halo rig for capturing those moments.

Picture a harness featuring a ring attached to a series of 10 to 12 cameras encircling an actor’s face. This setup enabled the team to capture the performer’s complete facial expressions from various viewpoints.

Then, this comprehensive 3D capture of the head was superimposed onto a stunt double’s body, enabling believable and complex physical interactions that would have been impossible with traditional split-screen methods alone.

The combination of these two techniques allowed them to shoot some of the more intense scenes in the movie, and then allowed Jordan to add nuance to his performances as each of the brothers.

The use of time-tested techniques and cutting-edge technology like the Halo rig is what brought the unique character dynamics of
Sinners
brings it to life and highlights the continuously evolving craftsmanship and inventiveness of cinema.

Great job to everyone who was part of this, and for the rest of you, make sure to pay attention.
