AI can assist with summarizing, poetic expression, and forming concepts, yet can it soften meat? Indeed, it can. Recently, I relished what might be one of the finest grilled steaks I’ve ever had, thanks to an AI-driven robotic grill from SeerGrills called the Perfecta.
Under the shade of White Maples and London Planetrees in New York City’s Union Square sat a pair of boxy Perfecta Grills, both waiting to grill up various meats with the assistance of AI. I’d been invited to taste-test the output, and to say I was skeptical was putting it lightly.
I’ve spent years mastering the art of grilling and have discovered that achieving perfectly cooked barbecue isn’t always simple. The thickness of the cut can lead to overcooking or undercooking, despite using precise digital thermometers to ensure the ideal medium-rare steak or thoroughly done chicken temperatures.
SeerGrill’s Perfecta isn’t very grill-like in appearance. It features a rectangular propane-fueled setup with an internal cooking compartment filled with steel and ceramics and equipped with infrared technology. There’s also a receptacle beneath it designed to catch excess fats and oils. Throughout the cooking process, this chamber stays open to ensure proper airflow, which removes moisture and smoke from the food, helping maintain its crispy texture rather than leaving it soggy.
I eagerly observed as a thick, one-inch steak was positioned within a set of spring-loaded holders. These holders guide the steak down into the chamber in a vertical manner. Curious about the process, I inquired whether the machine requires input regarding either the weight or thickness of the meat. Representatives from SeerGrills explained that their system merely necessitates information on the type of protein—whether it’s meat or fish—and your preferred level of doneness. The device automatically assesses the meat’s thickness using built-in sensors, after which automated mechanisms adjust the position of the burners accordingly.
SeerGrills asserts that the Perfecta can prepare any steak within 90 seconds (along with approximately 30 seconds of resting), cook chicken in about 160 seconds, and make burgers in 90 seconds as well. This rapid cooking time is expected, given that the device heats up to an impressive temperature of 1,652 degrees Fahrenheit (which equals 900 degrees Celsius).
The executives at Seergrills inform me that the AI doesn’t just know how to prepare all these meats, but it can also adapt to understand your personal grilling preferences over time and use this insight for subsequent barbecue sessions.
I heard everything out, yet I was concerned that an AI and robotic grills might not grasp how I prefer my steak. Achieving the perfect medium-rare can be challenging, and even if the meat is cooked properly, there’s always the risk of it being flavorless.
They began by heating up the grill, a process that was completed in under a minute. Next, I observed them insert the marinated steak into the Perfecta via some detachable grips and inserted an electronic thermometer at the middle of the meat. Although this device serves as a secondary check for doneness, executives from SeerGrills informed me that future upgrades might render such verification redundant.
On the digital interface, they pressed several buttons—since you must either connect the grill to an outlet or hook it up to a battery for power—they selected the desired meat type and degree of doneness (a perfect medium-rare, naturally). Peering inside, I noticed flickers of flame dancing across the ceramic walls. The scene also included crackling sounds, wisps of smoke, and the appetizing aroma of cooking meat wafting through the air.
After waiting for 90 seconds, they allowed the steak to rest in the Perfecta for another 30 seconds. Once ready, they removed the steak and opened the grill tray. The tray was covered with grime, but the chef had previously demonstrated how the magnetic panels could easily detach and go directly into a dishwasher.
A moment later, they were slicing through what looked like a perfectly cooked steak. I ate a few slices and was shocked. It was tender, moist, and most importantly, delicious.
Afterward, they inserted a chicken breast into the second Perfecta Grill. The automated burners moved independently back and forth, and precisely 152 seconds afterward, the chicken was done. Upon slicing it open, I observed that it had an impeccable white appearance. As for the taste, sampling a piece left me impressed—it was wonderfully tender yet boasted crisp edges.
I was quite impressed. Starting next month, this grill will be priced at $5,999 once shipments begin. This is steep for any type of grill, let alone a smart one. However, can you really quantify perfection?
SeerGrills is also open to selling you the stand – though they didn’t quote a price for it – and they offer grill covers as well if you wish to leave your almost $6000 outdoor cooking treasure outside. With an IP22 rating, this appliance can withstand light rain but nothing more substantial.
This isn’t the type of AI known for elaborate writing or fantastical visuals. Rather, it seems like a robust combination of AI and robotics specifically designed to serve up one of the finest steaks I have ever had.
